Stop the Goverment Garden Grab

Stop the Labour Government Garden Grab

Conservatives, Stephen Mold & Matthew Holmes close to proposed developments on Station Road, Mickleover.

Stop inappropriate & unpopular developments !!

Planning rules introduced by this Labour Government reclassified gardens as brownfield sites putting them in the same category as a disused factory - favouring development over other land.

Schemes see family houses with gardens snapped up by builders with existing houses demolished and replaced by high density apartment blocks.

Conservative MP Caroline Spelman, Shadow Secretary of State for Communities, said: "The character of neighbourhoods is being fundamentally changed in an unplanned and unsustainable way - with no concern for the environment or the lack of infrastructure.

Mrs Spelman is leading the Conservatives campaign to reverse Labour's policy that classify back gardens as 'brownfield' land.

It is hoped that her Private Members Bill due to be presented to parliament later this year will be given enough support to protect back gardens from developers.

She has also called on Prime Minister, Gordon Brown to close the loophole and has pledged to change the planning rules if the Conservatives win the next General Election.

As part of our local manifesto, we are committed to fighting against and opposing inappropriate back garden developments.

Britain’s gardens are under increasing threat of destruction arising from inappropriate and unpopular development with local opinion being disregarded and communities left powerless to prevent the infill of green spaces, with the loss of precious biodiversity, the increased strain on local infrastructure notably with regard to parking and traffic flow, and the resulting change in the fundamental character of neighbourhoods against local wishes.

The Petitioners therefore request that the House of Commons urges the Government to bring forward legislation to give stronger protection to gardens in planning law.
