The
Conservatives have stepped up the pressure on
Gordon Brown to hold a referendum on the new
European Union treaty signed by Tony Blair in
his last few days as Prime Minister.
Labour promised in 2005 that it would allow you
to vote on the planned Constitution which had
been agreed the previous year. But the
Government was let off the hook when French and
Dutch voters defeated the idea.
The Conservatives believe that the new treaty
agreed in Brussels amounts to a surrender of
power away from Britain to the EU.
Labour’s local MP Margaret Beckett has dismissed
calls for the public to have a vote on the new
agreement, saying Britain was not a country that
"governs by referendum". The new treaty is due
to be signed by the end of this year and come
into effect in 2009.
Conservative Shadow Foreign Secretary, William
Hague said, “ If Gordon Brown has any intention
of being straightforward in his dealings, he
would honour that election pledge. The British
people must be granted a referendum if the
forthcoming EU leaders' summit agrees to plans
designed to resurrect a new constitution.
This Government has absolutely no democratic
mandate to bring in parts of the Constitution
without a referendum of the British people “.
